The ESPN Sports Culture
One can hardly dispute that ESPN has had a huge effect on the sports world. I would say it has had mostly a positive effect on sports too.
If you are a diehard sports fan, ESPN is YOUR cable channel. Even the casual sports fan can appreciate ESPN and its offerings.
ESPN has televised many different types of sports. It has given the lesser known sports first and even greater exposure.
The sports fan can watch more sports events than ever– thanks to ESPN whether on its network or some other sports network. Because of ESPN’s succcess, people know how lucative televising sports can become.
ESPN has provided more coverage of the major sports like baseball, basketball, football etc. You also have in depth shows focusing particular on one major sport.
ESPN provides credibility to sports teams. I am thinking college now. For example, it shows games from smaller schools and smaller conferences. Everybody wants to be on ESPN. It provides exposure and status.
One bad thing that ESPN does however is throw its power around. How bad sometimes do you want to be on the network? ESPN controls the times. That’s why some games may start at 10 o’clock in the morning or 11 o’clock at night.
But sports fans, picture life without ESPN. That is so hard to imagine because the network has become such a fabric of American life.
