Several people at this site like to call themselves conservative, or talk about their conservative values. I would like to hear from anyone willing, to describe themself as a conservative or liberal and explain why. And in doing so, I would like them to touch upon major issues and show how their reasoning is tied to their ideology.
i think it would be an interesting intellectual exercise for everyone and would go a long way in helping us understand where everyone is coming from.
If you engage in this essay of sorts, please try to touch upon social, political, and fiscal issues. Be as broad and as in depth as you can. I’d honestly be interested in hearing what people have to say about familial, sexual, and other cultural issues. I’d like to hear why people think a flat tax is good or that preemptive strikes are good. But I really want to hear how these issues tie into people’s ideological values and beliefs.
Adamelijah, Terp, and JHWhicker, please tell me what makes you a conservative and how your reasoning is guided by such values.
On the otherside, I’d like to hear from MisterE and BrianR.

I like the idea of Nate’s challenge (NP/8265). It will hopefully help us all to look at the reasoning behind what we believe. Hopefully, this may go far to dissolving the engrained rivalry that makes American Politics look like a sports g….
#(#8265)Nate asked# for those of us who are either conservative or liberal to state our views and as to why. That’s a good question because my world is usually not so black and white. I do believe that my opinions are those of a liberal, if that mean….
I have never thought of myself ans a conserative. So, I am not sure where I stand today.(?) I used to be a staunch (Vermont) Democrate and never liked the Republican stance. With so much corruption in corporate America and Congess and the White House–with their Jacobin hegemon ideals–I have since changed party affiliations–here in Oregon. I am now a party of one.
Although I am a fifty-nine year old baby boomer, I worry about what kind of furture my 2 year old graddaughter will have–in the next 20 years. Will there even be an America? And I sometimes think that just maybe the EU has the right approach to governance.(?) Does that make me a liberal or a surrealist dreamer?
Alright Nate, I am going to take you up on this with a blog post tomorrow. In the meantime, let me leave you with this tidbit: Our American perceptions of what "liberal" and "conservative" is can sometimes be the mirror opposite of the European version of "liberal" and "conservative."
By now everyone at Where I Stand is aware of Nate’s challenge to define conservatism as we see it and why we are conservative and why we think certain things are or are not a good idea. The notion behind calling yourself a "conservative" is….
I touched upon this a little in this old post of mine:

I might expand on it a little more later, but for now that’s why I am the way I am…
Alright, Nate (NP/8265), here it is:
I am a conservative, maybe even a libertarian. I believe in the democratic system and the freedom that it allows us. People should be free to act as they please, as long as their actions do not impede….
NP asks (NP/8265) a great question. He wants to know what makes the Conservatives and Liberals at WIS tick.
Adamelijah, Terp, and JHWhicker, please tell me what makes you a conservative and how your reasoning is guided by such values.
