Embarrassment abound, I wonder how long it will be until Bush has Abramoff killed. I posted earlier about lobbyists, and how their very existence seems somehow troublesome.
These people can so easily persuade congressmen to enter into fraudulent actions, because it plays right into the sin: greed. Think about these congress people… government workers, in a sort of weird position where some have more power than others, but there are so many of them that individuals rarely stand out.
Then there are these lobbyists, who really are over glorified salesmen or solicitors. They’re sharks interested in manipulating opinions and swaying arguments in their favor. And every knows the one big thing old white people will never refuse, money. In the forms of gifts or business opportunities… it doesn’t matter. Anybody with enough money can persuade enough congressmen to sell cigarettes in schools. Look how successful the tobacco lobbyists and alcohol lobbyists have been.
My god, its common knowledge that cigarettes are death sentences, yet not only are they still legal (and somehow marijuana is not) but they are still allowed to advertise in full color, full page magazine ads to kids!
Well, maybe the tides are turning.
The US Senate yesterday overwhelmingly passed legislation reining in lobbyists.
It aims to stop Congress members accepting gifts or meals from registered lobbyists and to require lobbyists to disclose their activities in quarterly reports electronically available to the public.
The Senate action was clearly spurred by embarrassment over Abramoff’s dealings and recent financial scandals surrounding at least two senior Republicans.
Now, clearly republicans are much more susceptible to these scandals and gifts, its in their nature, but I’m sure there are a fair share of democrats who are guilty of the same thing. Come on, the republicans are in the hot seat right now, so you can’t get mad at me for jabbing at the GOP, they deserve it… and you’re not exactly clean from jabbing at the leftists or the dems. [that was a proverbial you].
Now the real question is, will Jack lead us to some more scandals occurring in the white house? We know he knew Bush very well, there is goddamned evidence supporting it, and we can assume with a great degree of certainty that Bush was involved, along with a lot of his aids. I’m sure if it all came out in the newspaper tomorrow, no one would be surprised. But I’ve said it before, despite all of Bush’s incredible crimes and fuck-ups, I can’t shake the feeling that if the man ‘ran’ for president next week, he would still win. I am sure there are well meaning republicans, as well as the republicans that are currently in office… but the whole party is getting embarrassed, and there’s really only one administration to blame. These republican scandals seem too frequent for our own good. Democratic scandals, at least recently, are so much less hurtful and damaging to the American people… if anything, someone gets an orgasm out of it, and orgasms are good.
I am now motivated to write about orgasms… a new most under health by Dr. MisterE coming soon.
—-UPDATED—–
Fixed some dumb spelling errors. Also, to address jallard… a very well written comment. Sounds like something jallard wrote before for a news paper or an opinion column and just cut and pasted it… would never blame him if that is true, I’ve done it, we all do it… the fact is, its a very well written comment, and I’m glad its on my post, so I don’t care if he wrote it just for my post or not, its relevant and true. It is within the realm of what we find acceptable to be greedy and power hungry. We breed this kind of rationale to the point where its ingrained in our moral fiber. So blaming the government may not be the best thing, but the government is supposed to be our leaders and our representatives… it would be who of them to act with much more wisdom and grace, but the fact is they are far worse, and its all because of money. With power comes money, and that will always make the receiver all the more greedy.
