Big tournament underway today, apparently

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

If it weren’t for the brackets on every corner of the Web, I’d likely have forgotten the greatest event in American sports started today. Don’t get me wrong. I filled out a bracket. But if you think I’m talking about basketball, you having been wasting enough time on the Internet:

There’s the March Sadness Bracket. (Just me laughing? shit, I need sensitivity training)

There’s the Culture Bracket

Apparently NCAA Division I Wrestling puts brackets out this time of year.  Not sure their timing for maximizing the sports media’s attention is the best.

Here’s what I do know:

  • It doesn’t matter what you know about the college basketball, the tournament or the teams playing in it. The chances of picking all your games correctly are mind boggling? 1 in 7.2 trillion. I didn’t know that number existed. I just thought it was an imaginary number used by kids trying to one up each other in infinity contests.
  • My final four: Kansas, UNC, UCONN and Texas. My champ? Kansas. Remind me to switch stands on the whereIstand issue.
  • I know I won’t watch a minute of the women’s basketball tournament unless/until Tennessee plays Rutgers and/or UCONN. Not because I’m sexist in any way, but because women’s Division I basketball is disparately uncompetitive. UCONN or Tennessee have won 9 of the last 13 National Championships. Off the record though, Marist College, the new Gonzaga of women’s basketball, is my horse.
