Stop The Smear
One of the many reasons why I plan to vote for Barack Obama is because he has managed to remain true to his message and doesn’t allow smears to hijack his campaign. Unfortunately, those who are trying to ruin his reputation will gain some footing since many Americans will not do any research to see if what these smears say is true or false. Well, Obama has created a Web site to help squash these lies, lies that say there is a tape with Michelle Obama using the term “whitey.” Lies that say he is hiding his birth certificate. Lies that say Obama is a Muslim. Lies that misquote his book. And lies that say he won’t say the Pledge of Allegiance. I imagine that this Web site will be around for the duration of the campaign, addressing the continuous smearing that goes on. The message on this site begins thusly:
“What you won’t hear from this campaign or this party is the kind of politics that uses religion as a wedge, and patriotism as a bludgeon—that sees our opponents not as competitors to challenge, but enemies to demonize. Because we may call ourselves Democrats or Republicans, but we are Americans first. We are always Americans first.” –Barack Obama, June 3rd, 2008
I’m sure there are some stances that Obama takes that I do not agree with, but when he is attempting to keep the campaign clean and as honest as possible, I cannot help but respect this man, a man whose proven that he is slow to anger. I must say, that is an important quality to bring into the White House.
Conversely, the Fox Agenda Channel once again uses its pundits to try to unsettle voters by implementing slander against the presumptive Democratic candidate. Fox’s mouthpieces referred to Michelle Obama as “Obama’s baby mama.” In case you’ve never heard the phrase “baby mama,” it is used, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, “chiefly in African-American usage” referring to “the mother of a man’s child, who is not his wife nor (in most cases) his current or exclusive partner.”
Are we becoming too sensitive to these kinds of slander? Hardly. Earlier this week, a Fox Agenda anchor, E.D. Hill actually suggested that the fist bump that the Obamas share with each other as a husband and wife is perhaps a “terrorist fist jab.” If that isn’t enough to warn you of the dangers of this station trying to pass itself off as a venue of “We Report So You Can Decide,” I’m not sure what is. Now is the time to stop the divisive wedge.
I’m imploring everyone to begin to look at the topics the media brings to our attention during this campaign and begin asking yourself these questions: Is this a distraction from the issues that matter? Is this smear or fact? Meanwhile, be sure to check in on the Web site www.fightthesmear.com to read the truth so that you can make an informed decision in November.
