There was a bizarre concern here on Where I Stand in response to the Senate passing legislation in order for girls under the age of eighteen to terminate a pregnancy:
The bill does not stop a grown adult from getting an abortion, what it does stop is adults taking girls across state lines to have abortions. This includes pedophiles, for whom a pregnant girl will lead to questions that could put them behind bars.
Then, even the one who posted this knew how foolish it must have sounded because he continued:
Of course, to pretend that only pedophiles drag girls across state lines to abort a pregnancy would be unfair. Indeed, several times a busybody adult will do it. Because, they as an esteemed liberal know how to raise your child better than you.
Hmmm….That’s an interesting point. Needless to say, there was sarcasm dripping from that last poorly worded sentence, but it is a good thing that one of those “esteemed liberals” (AKA busybody) wasn’t around to interfere when 13-year old Spring Adams was about to have an abortion. It was her father (I suppose like the one who knows how to raise a child, referenced in that last sentence) who impregnated her. On the day she was to have an abortion, her father stopped her… by shooting her.
As writer Judith Warner stated, “The Child Custody Protection Act would make it illegal for any adult other than a parent to take a minor across state lines to get an abortion. If the bill makes it into law, an incest victim, a rape victim or any other vulnerable pregnant teen who lives in a state that requires parental notification for abortion will no longer be able to seek the help of a grandmother.”
People in the senate are quite likely people who come from homes where there is a loving family life. Certainly not every one, but it is likely that the men and women who are trying to pass this bill cannot fathom a father like the one who murdered Spring Adams. Unfortunately, they exist. The life this thirteen-year-old child lived must have been a nightmare; one where she quite likely felt unsafe much of the time. A parent is supposed to be protective. What Adams’ father did to her was monstrous.
So, in effect, the blogger was right about pedophiles, but quite often these pedophiles are someone’s father.
