McCain To Illegal Immigrants: Your God’s Children

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Can’t wait to see how this goes over with the Rush Limbaugh wing of the Republican Party.

McCain told the Latino officials the proposal failed because Americans were not confident Congress would protect U.S. borders before dealing with the question of illegal immigration.

“GOD’S CHILDREN”

“I want to assure you we will address this issue in a humane and compassionate fashion,” he said, calling illegal immigrants “God’s children.”

If I were Obama I would make stem cell research, illegal immigration and the marriage amendment the platform of my campaign. McCain shares the same position as his liberal counterpart on all of these hot button issues. That’s certainly not going to inspire the base of the Republican Party in November.brianr - whereIstand.com

Amendment Misses by One Vote

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

Political posturing?  Well, the amendment fell one vote short as I said earlier today could happen.   I’m shocked how close it came…it was like a roid rage of patriotism on the hill in an attempt to woo voters before the 4th of July weekend.

Bill Frist, one of my favorite GOP pigs in the Senate said this…

"Countless men and women have died defending that flag," said Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., closing two days of debate. "It is but a small humble act for us to defend it."

Very noble Bill…you’re a true American.  That sounds great to voters doesn’t it.  See, for me it seems like the countless men and women who have died defending the flag would be more concerned about the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, or why more and more people across this planet continue to think we are a greater threat to the world than Iran, North Korea and terrorism.  I feel like they would be concerned about the civil liberties they fought for and how they’re being compromised due to radical foreign policy schemes.  I feel like they may be more pissed off about the reputations we’ve now gotten from Abu Ghraib and Gitmo.

That’s just me making a wild diagnosis, ala Dr. Frist.

I do take offense and it does bother me to see the flag being burned.  It’s inappropriate and disrespectful.  There’s just something disingenuous and infantile about this proposal at this time.

Flag Burning Amendment Getting Hard Push

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

I usually don’t like to waste my time taking stands on issues that are mere political stunts in an election year.  But this issue surprises me in how bi-partisan the debate is.  I tend to agree with Sen. Leahy when he says…

The Constitution is too important to be used for partisan political purposes; and so, in my view, is the American flag," said Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy, the senior Democrat on Specter’s committee. "This is most especially not the time for the Senate to vote to limit American fundamental rights or to strike at the heart of the First Amendment."

Some now speculate that 66 senators are showing signs of support.  All they would need then is one more to pass it.  But doesn’t this amendment violate free speech protections in the 1st amendment?  I guess election year politics comes first…

I agree that flag burning is disrespectful to those who fought and died for this country in great causes, but there’s something shallow to me about bringing this issue up year in and year out, instead of solving real problems that face the country as Adam states below…

Its a hallow gesture that everyone’s going to play with. As it has for the past 15 years or so, it’ll fail, but don’t worry like the Terminator, it’ll be back. You see, politicians can’t let this die, they want to vote on this thing every year, so they’ll have the opportunity to pump their fist and show their patriotism, all while ignoring the nation’s substantive problems.

Sen. Biden takes the debate to a whole new level when he complains that the amendment doesn’t even define desecration….

The amendment would “leave to the authority of the government to make a subjective judgment as to whether or not the action taken relative to the flag is a violation of the law,” Biden said.

`Very Skimpy Bathing Suit’

That could permit the prosecution of women on beaches “wearing a very skimpy bathing suit” decorated with the flag’s stars and stripes, he said. “Is that desecration of the flag?”
